What we do
Virtually all of us start our sexual journey with an attraction to a child. Most people find the age of those they are attracted to increases as they grow older. Nearly half of all adult men experience some sexual interest in children (Goode, Sarah D., 2010). In several studies, 25% of adult men acknowledged some level of sexual attraction to prepubescent children (Wortley, Richard K., 2015). Those whose sexual attraction to children is equal to or greater than their attraction to adults are said to have a pedophilic sexual orientation. Less than 5% of adult males qualify for a formal diagnosis of pedophilic disorder (APA, 2013). Some scientists believe that only 1% of the population has a primary erotic attraction to preadolescent children. In any case, being sexually attracted to children is much more common than most people would like to admit.
While scientists do not agree on the cause of pedophilia, any genetic factor there may be is apparently initialized by some environmental factor.
Pedophia is not always a mental disorder
The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (APA, 2013) changed the name of the diagnosis for pedophilia to "pedophilic disorder," while using the term "pedophilia" to describe a pedophilic sexual orientation or interest, even when there is no evidence of acting on the urges or distress regarding the attraction to children.
